YapLink lets two or more people talk to each other across languages. When you speak, your phone sends the audio to our relay server, which translates it and sends the spoken translation to the other people in your room. This policy explains exactly what is handled and what is not.
Your conversations are not recorded. Audio and the text transcribed from it are held in memory only for the seconds it takes to translate and deliver them, and are then discarded. We do not write conversation audio or transcripts to disk or to any database. Captions shown on screen are held on your device. Display names exist on the relay only while the room is in use. Room codes also appear in the technical session diagnostics described above. The live room is deleted after it is empty.
Debug mode. If you turn on Debug mode in the app's settings, the audio from your own microphone is saved on our relay while it is on, so we can listen to it when you report a problem. Only your own microphone is saved, never the other person's. These recordings are deleted automatically after 7 days. Turn Debug mode off to stop it at any time.
We use Microsoft Azure Speech as a processor to perform speech recognition, translation, and speech synthesis. Your audio is sent to Microsoft for that purpose. See the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
If you have chosen to be heard in your own voice, we also use Fish Audio to synthesise that voice. Your voice recording and the translated text to be spoken are sent to Fish Audio for that purpose, and for no other. See the Fish Audio Privacy Policy. If you never record a voice, nothing is ever sent to Fish Audio.
The app asks for your agreement to all of this before it sends anything, on a screen shown the first time you open it. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone beyond the two processors named here.
The free app shows banner ads supplied by Google AdMob, which may use a device advertising identifier to select and measure them. Your conversations, your audio and your voice recording are never used for advertising and are never sent to an advertising service. A one-time in-app purchase removes ads permanently. The iOS and Android apps use Firebase Analytics to collect app launches, sessions, engagement, device and app information, and approximate campaign attribution. The app also records content-free milestones: a conversation starting, the first completed translation in it, the number and duration of completed conversations, and the product, local price, currency, and store transaction ID of a completed purchase. We use this information to understand whether YapLink is working reliably and which product or marketing changes help people use it. Firebase Analytics does not receive conversation audio, captions, translated text, display names, room codes, feedback messages, or the email address entered on the feedback form.
Firebase Analytics stays off until the app has your privacy choices, and then follows them. In the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, Google's consent form is shown first: analytics runs only if you agree to storing information on your device and to measurement, and the advertising-related signals (ad storage, ad user data, and ad personalization) are sent to Google only for the purposes you agree to. Elsewhere analytics is on, and if you opt out of the sale or sharing of your data or of targeted advertising under a US state privacy law, the app tells Google not to use your data for ad personalization. On iOS the advertising-related signals are only sent if you also allow tracking when Apple asks. Where your region requires it, you can change your choice at any time from "Privacy choices" in the app's menu.
The apps also use AppsFlyer to learn which ad, if any, led to an install. AppsFlyer starts each time the app opens, once the consent and tracking prompts above have been answered or skipped, and receives the install and open events, the same content-free milestones listed above, device and app information, IP address, and the device's advertising identifier where the platform allows it (on iOS only if you allow tracking). In the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland the app also passes your consent choices to AppsFlyer, which uses them to limit what it shares with ad networks. AppsFlyer tells the app which ad network and campaign, if any, it credits with the install, and the app stores that in its install record on our relay. See AppsFlyer's Services Privacy Policy.
On iOS, Apple's privacy-preserving ad attribution (SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit) is handled by AppsFlyer: its SDK sets the conversion value from the same content-free milestones, and copies of Apple's postbacks go to AppsFlyer. Neither YapLink's own code nor Firebase sets that value. Apple and participating ad networks receive it through delayed, aggregated postbacks. The value does not contain conversation content or identify the person using the app.
On the YapLink website, Google Ads, Reddit Ads, Meta, and TikTok measurement is disabled by default for visitors in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland. If you accept optional cookies, these providers may receive page visits, clicks on the App Store or Google Play buttons, campaign parameters, and basic browser or device information. They may also use cookies or advertising identifiers for attribution. Advertising personalization remains disabled for Google. We use this information to understand which ads lead people to download YapLink. We never send conversation audio, captions, translated text, display names, or room codes to analytics.
See Google's Privacy Policy, Reddit's Privacy Policy, Meta's Privacy Policy, and TikTok's Privacy Policy. When you arrive from an ad, the Google Play button also carries that ad's campaign name to Google Play, so the Android app can record which campaign it was installed from. You can reject optional cookies and continue using the website normally. To decide whether the consent prompt is required, the page checks your browser's time zone on your device; nothing is sent anywhere for that check. Outside the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, measurement is on without a prompt.
Connections between the app and our server use TLS (wss://).
Credentials for the translation service are held only on the server and are
never placed in the app.
This should be obvious, but: anything you say while unmuted is translated and played to the other people in your room, and shown to them as a caption. Use the mute button when you do not want to be heard.
If you type your email into Settings in the app, we store it with your install ID, add it to our mailing list and may email you about your account and YapLink news. The first time you add one we give you 25 credits. You can ask us to remove it at any time at the address below.
The feedback form at yaplink.co/feedback sends your email address, your message, any screenshots you attach and, when you open it from the app, the app version, your install ID and the times and room codes of your last few calls. It is delivered by email to our team through Microsoft Azure Communication Services and is not stored on our server. We use your email address only to reply to you.
YapLink is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
We do not retain your conversations or hold an account for you. What we do keep is tied only to the random install ID: the install record and the short-lived diagnostics described above. To have them exported or deleted, use "Feedback or bug report" in the app's Settings (the report includes your install ID) or email us at the address below with that ID. Deleting the install record also deletes any unspent voice credits. Uninstalling the app removes everything it keeps on your device, but not the records on our server, because nothing on the server can tell that the app was removed.
